In the beginning of March, I had the incredible opportunity to document the Surfrider California Regional Conference at the stunning Asilomar Conference Center. Surrounded by the rugged beauty of the Monterey coastline, the event brought together passionate ocean advocates, Surfrider chapter leaders, and student activists for a weekend of education, collaboration, and inspiration.

Capturing the Energy of Coastal Activism
From the opening session, it was clear that this gathering was something special. Surfrider CEO Chad Nelsen set the tone with an engaging keynote, reflecting on his lifelong commitment to protecting our oceans and the challenges we face moving into 2025. His passion was palpable.
The real magic of the conference was in the interactions. The deep conversations over coffee, the breakout sessions where ideas took shape, and the collaborative spirit that turned knowledge into action. Surfrider leaders sharing insights on the California Coastal Act, the impact of recent wildfires on our shores, and the strategies being deployed to combat plastic pollution and coastal erosion. All of this is real for us on the California coast.

The Power of Community
One of the most striking things about this event was the unity. With over 200 chapters and student clubs across the country, Surfrider’s strength lies in its network of dedicated individuals. Seeing and photographing these leaders, many of whom have been working on these issues for years, connect, problem-solve, and plan for the future was a powerful reminder that real change happens when we come together.
The breakout sessions were particularly engaging, with discussions on water quality testing, community organizing, and Surfrider’s nationwide student club network.
A Visual Chronicle of Passion and Purpose
As the sun set over the Pacific, attendees gathered around a beach bonfire, a perfect moment to reflect on the work being done and the friendships being formed. The images from this moment tell a story of camaraderie, of shared purpose, and of the deep-rooted love we all have for the ocean.
Bringing the Message Home Through Photography
As a photographer, my goal is always to reflect the best of a moment, a movement, and the people driving it forward. Documenting the Surfrider California Regional Conference wasn’t just about taking pictures, it was about storytelling.
